Normal base idle for an LO3?
I'm just curious on what the idle should be when I crank up my car and it is in park. Sometimes it's at 1100 RPM while others it's around 700 RPM. Usually it's at lower RPM's after the engine has warmed up. Thanks in advance. l8r
SB,
There is a fast idle cam on the choke linkage. Until the choke heater is completely warm, the idle speed is supposed to be higher than when warm. The 700 RPM hot idle sounds about right. 1,100 could be correct.
The high idle speed is supposed to be set at around 1,600-1,700 RPM on the highest step, but as with all engine adjustments, this must be done with the engine at full operating temperature. A cold engine will not idle as high as the "hot" setting, and as the choke warms, the idle cam gradually tapers down in steps, lowering idle speed. Apparently, your choke is not warming as fast as you would prefer, or your linkage is getting sticky.

Vader, turns out that the idle is what you said it usually is. A while back I had trouble with a bad IAC valve and the idle was all over the place, but everything is running smooth now. Thanks for the help.
Vader, right, except the L03 is TBI not carbed :-). The only idle speed adjustment you can make is when you disconnect the IAC and set the absolute minimum idle (should be 450-500).
Soulbounder, that sounds pretty normal.

Not sure about what the base idle setting should be. GM plugs the screw at the factory....suggest you verify that setting with a manual.
The IAC is what controls the idle. the range mainly depends on the loop status. Open loop can go as high as 1500rpm when the engine is cold. When warm the idle sits between 700 - 750rpm. It could be different on an auto....mines a stick

Pukka, you're right about the plug but it is easy to remove. The 450-500 RPM is the minimum idle speed. (According to Chilton's). That's with the IAC disabled (you set the idle screw with the IAC unplugged. That way the computer isn't adjusting the idle speed and messing you up while you're trying to adjust it. I can give you the whole procedure for setting it if you'd like, it's not very long). Once you reconnect the IAC the computer will keep the idle higher, usually in the 650-750 range. I believe it is basically the same for manual vs auto.
