Need some help with my Third Gen. runs like crap!!!!

Need some help with my Third Gen. runs like crap!!!!
Well heres the problem...
The car is a 1986 Iroc Z with a 305 TPI. Most of the time it runs fine. Once in a while when started it will shoot to 3000 Rpm's and have a check engine light. It will stay at 3000 for like 20 minutes.
If you drop it into gear it will go down to about 1200 and run like total dog crap around 1000-2500 rpm's. It pops and chokes and almost stalls. It will drive okay after about 2500rpm's. If it gets back down to the 1500-2500 range it will run like dog crap again. If you put it into park it will shoot right back up to 3200 r's.
What the heck is wrong with this thing??? I'm tired of it!!!
