Valve Cover holes. What can I do?
While doing my intake gasket I also replaced my valve covers. I put on the Chevy Bow-Tie's
Anyway on the passenger side cover there is a grommet for a hoses that runs from the cover to the throttle body, what is that for?
The grommet that is on the valve cover is to big for the fitting that is on the hose now, how can I fix that? or can I just plug it?
Also if I put a breather oil cap where the original cap goes will it start spewing out oil? or do I have to use a closed cap?
thanks

you should be able to use a breather with out any problems, i put one on my sons 355. you can by gromets at most parts stores, so you should be able to find what you need. just measure the hole it goes in and the size of the hole you need in it.

EDE,
Why did they route the hose from the throttle body to the valve cover? Was it just for fresher air????? Just curious. I've got the same problem right now with mine and it is spewing oil onto the VCs.
Sparks a flyin'

One word - DON'T!
If your '87 still has a MAF, and you really don't want to run around in "limp home" mode all the time while staring at the little "Yellow lamp of doom" on the dash, don't do it.
The vent tube from the throttle body to the right rocker cover is the supply of fresh air to the crankcase. The PCV valve allows a given amount of air to enter the intake. The air is supplied from the front of the throttle body so that the MAF measures it in addition to the air going directly through the throttle body. You need to sense this air, since it eventually ends up in the cylinders. If you don't, you'll most likely get a code '34' indicating low MAF flow.
For the very same reasons, you should NOT use a breather-type oil filler cap. Oil shouldn't come pouring out the cap, but air will be allowed in without being measured by the MAF. This is all assuming, of course, that you don't want to be President of the Code 34 Club...

Glad I read your post Vader. I almost decided to go with an aftermarket set of valve covers and use a breather cap instead of the crankcase tube. I didn't think about the possibility of it screwing up the MAF. I'm glad I backed out of that deal now!

Vader,
Does right side = passenger side?
If so ,on my car, the pcv valve is on the drivers side. On the passenger side is the hose leading from the TB to the valve cover. This hole has a grommet and an elbow, nothing else (has always been that way - I'm the origional owner and the hose was the one on there when I bought it). The hose finally cracked, hence the oil. I was under the impression that this hose was to draw out gases built up under the valve cover (won't say where I heard that one from).
Anyways, I had already tried the breather cap on mine. Didn't set any codes, but the car now hesitates a little on startup (did this with the cracked hose also) and actually died twice after putting it in gear. I'm going to switch back to a hose and the elbow with some clamps, since the local auto parts store doesn't seem to carry the right size for it(can't figure that one out).
Sparks a flyin'.
