New distributor install / timing problem

Getting ready to installing the distributor in my recently rebuilt engine and noticed it doesn't seem to have the same timing tab on the timing cover. My old one was a tube with what looked like a saw blade. The timing cover the shop put on has a small triangle but is farther to the right than the orignal and looks almost smashed out of shape. Not sure to trust it or not, or if it is even a timing tab.. It was a 305 but now has a 400 crank so the damper is biger and I don't think the old cover would have worked anyway... not sure what I should do at this point.

if you have the same timeing cover and it matches the damper you should be ok. the distributor wouldn't matter. i read it twice and was never clear what you have, or what you changed. you can always find TDC and check the damper and the timing mark.

That looks like they cut off the timing tab.

You could probably just use an aftermarket tab (Mr. gasket, etc.) that bolts to the timing cover.

The dist. drops in as normal.

I was able to bend the point on the tab back down to where it looks normal... Its pretty week and I was affrade it would break off, but it didn't.. Do I need to grease the distributor gear or shaft before installing it? Chiltons doesn't say to but want to make sure..
