Overheating

My engine's running a bit too hot for my liking.. The fan (electric) doesn't cut on until the engine's at about 240 degrees, and then cuts back off at 220. It never quite reaches the redline on the temperature gauge, but 240 seems pretty hot to me. I checked basic things, such as radiator fluid levels, all vacuum hoses plugged in, the timing's set to about 7btdc.. I'm not sure what else to look for. Is there any way I can get the fan to come on at a lower temperature short of buying a new chip?

I was going to buy a lower thermostat but the guy mentioned that I might have problems with the fan not coming on at all, so I decided to try other things first.

If your cooling fan setup is the same as my '85 T/A you will have a water temp sensor under the RH ex manifold. I have set up my car with a Davies Craig adjustable thermoswitch. It just wires in replacing the factory sensor. It is adjustable so you can set it at whatever temp suits you.

Is it the type of adjustable thermostat that goes into the radiator hose, or does it mount in the block?
