question on gm 4.3l engine
question on gm 4.3l engine
It is a good motor? i am think about getting a 1991 chevy s10.
From my research, it's a pretty stout engine.
plus the stroke and bore is the same as the 350, but with 2 less cylinder.
question
1.So is the rod and piston interchangeable? 2.Is there a stroker kit for the engine(about 4.9 liter)?
3.is it the same engine as in the syclone/typhone, but without the turbo and intercooler?
4.is there after market cylinder head for it?
i know the newer vortec head flow alot better hence the difference between 160hp(before vortec) and 190hp(vortec)
thanks in advance

finially a question i know something about. it's the same as the ty/sy but no turbo. the 350 and 4.3 pistons are the same. the rod length i believe is the same, but not 100% sure. the rods don't interchange because the 4.3 has bigger crank pins. the mains are the same as large journal SBC. i don't know of any after market heads, i think gm makes a preformance head. i'd say it a good engine, the crank is a little weak because of the offset pins, but nothing to worry about unless you get nuts with juiceing it or something. never heard of a stroker kit for it either.

Dwang,
The 262 is a kick-butt V-6. Comp Cams, GM, (and probably others) make many performance grinds for the 3/4 350. Unfortunately, your only rod choices for the engine are stock cast iron or stock PM rods from a newer Vortec 4.3. The PM rods are good enough to take the little engine up to 340 HP.
GM offers three different performance aluminum heads for the 262, including an 18° valve-angle head and a splayed-valve head prepped for 2.25/1.70 valves for really big flows. There are several performance intakes available from several sources, and there are several iron and aluminum blocks with regular or siamesed bores to enable the use of 400 SBC pistons.
You can make a lot of torque with these six holes if you build right.

thanks for the info ede,
the truck i am looking to get is goona be a daily/realiable/no down time work horse, so i don't think i am actually gonna pull the engine and do work on it.
since the performance parts for the engine is pretty limited, i guess the next best thing is to drop a small block in to it...
vortech do make a supercharger kit for the 1999 and up 4.3 truck.
the stroker is just an idea, maybe some one with enoguh money can just get a 3.75 crank, and just cut 2 lobe off and weld it. make 4.9l with 100 pound less than a 305...
regards

thanks vader,
this is a sickness that i suffer from, i just can't leave any car alone... i should really leave it alone, otherwise my only way of transporation is goona be bus... hmmm i wonder how much boost those turbo disel engine can handle....
i think i saw some dyno chart for a stock syclone making 292 horsepower and 404 foot pounds of torque @ the rear wheel(by removing the front drive shaft).
i am kind suprise that no one make an after market turbocharger system for the 4.3 liter engine, after all gm already did all the design, all you need to do is copy it...

I think, as with everything else chevy, it costs fewer $/horsepower to build a 350 and drop it in than building a V6. In fact, if it runs really well, you could probably get enough cash selling the V6 to pay for a nice crate motor.
i know for sure you can build a 350 as cheap or cheaper than a 4.3. most of the preformance parts i've bought were for a 350 and i end up with spares from the 350 or sbc parts.
