Headers and Spark Plug Wires, OUCH!
Headers and Spark Plug Wires, OUCH!
Ive got an 82 Z28 and I just stuck on some edelbrock TES headers, and now im not kidding you, on the #1 spark plug, the wire goes DIRECTLY through the headers to get on the spark plug, and it melted right through the wires!! what the heck can I do to fix this, there is absolutely no other way to route it, do they make special wires for my car? i have not found them anywhere, its just on the #1 plug.. if this helps my engine is the 305.. please help with ANYTHING you can.. thanks..

With headers sometimes you need to get a longer wire and route it differently.
If this isn't an option, you can use a shorter plug (accel makes some "header" plugs) or you can get some "DEI Wire Sheaths" from Summit. (Pg.115) These will cover your plug wires and protect them from the headers.

Are you using 90 degree boots? They work fine on mine.

Yeah I am, it is the boot that is hitting my headers, there is absolutely no way to get around them without hitting them, 90 degree boot, etc, the way its setup is it goes directly through the headers to connect to the spark plug, it is unreal, i dont know what to do, i could get this heat tape, but yo know as well as me that it will melt that, knowing how hot headers get.

I Had that problem as well, but on the other side. I'm using a heat sleeve, and a straight boot. Am using Hooker shorty headers tho. Might be a difference in the setup, but that would be difficult to believe.
Sean...
How do you like those headers and what kinda car/engine do you have them on?
I am planning on getting the shorties w/ air
Thanks

I've got the TES headers on mine, and I know what you are talking about. Mine isn't quite as bad as yours, but I did end up purchasing a set of the Accel shorty spark plugs. They are roughly 5/8 inch shorter than standard plugs, and with the 90 degree boots mine clear the headers.
i had tes on my 350 iroc. i had to use accel shorty plugs on it with moroso blue max wires with 90* boots. no big problems, but i did have insulation on the wires.

Yeah, but my wire is okay, its my boot that is melting.. and the boot is a 90 degree boot, it has no where to go but on the headers, know what i mean, let mek now, and where do i get the header sleeves?
Mo,
I really like them, I don't, however, have the air system tho. Hooker part number is 2460, I think. They weren't very expensive either, $165.00 I think. Mine were on the 305, but am in the process of swapping a 350 this week. They're suppose to fit either engine. We'll see. The 350 I got is a 77 model engine, doubt that there's any difference in the blocks tho.

Plain and simple, you're doing something wrong. Having had edelbrock headers and never a single problem with burned wires 9and i didn't use anything fancy either, and even accel 8.8s with fat boots were fine) i can assure you there is no trick to it. I also never used short plugs, standard ACs were fine.
Personally, i liked the clean look of stock and ran the wires under the headers from behind the block using the factory wire looms on the DS. I do recall that i test fit some wires running them over the valve cover, but decided against it since they would just be in the way most of the time.
In short, like Nike says, just do it. They do fit. Thousands of thirdgen owners can't be wrong.
