Timing all screwed up!!
Timing all screwed up!!
I just finished replacing belts and intake gasket. Problem is I turned the engine and no longer have the timing where I marked it prior to tear down. I did put the distributor back and it went all the way in except that it was out of phase of where it was before. My question is there a way to fix it without taking the number one cylinder spark plug out? I did put the timing mark at TDC and the rotor points towards the number one on the distributor. But, am I perhaps on a different part of the cycle? Also I am wondering if the oil pump shaft would just stay stationary when I turned the engine from tightening the belts pulley? It doesnt make any sense that I was able to install the distrib. out of phase and hit the oil pump key also. Thanks in advance for any help!

It is very possible to get the dist. dropped in a different position than it was and still hit the oil pump drive right.
Will it run??

When installing the distributor in my 350, it would only install in 2 orientations, 180 degrees from one another. I'm assuming that one of these is the correct timing and the other is 180 off. Is this a normal safeguard that they build in?

No, the oil pump shaft can be moved, and the distributor (if installed to mate with the sahft) culd be in any orientation.
For the original poster....removing the #1 plug is pretty darn easy...pull it, manually rotate the motor till ya feel compression, then keep rotating till you don't feel any more air coming out...you should be close enough to stab the distributor and see if your in correctly, or a tooth off.

Also, you could rely on the Harmonic balancer mark (when #1 gets compression)...but if the ring has slipped, then it (TDC) will be off by that much.

I just sent you an e-mail with the step by step to properly install the distributor.
If anyone else is interested, I can send it; just let me know.
Let me know if I can help further.
