OK my 305tpi is running horribly. A couple days ago it just died driving down the road so I did some snooping replaced the ignition rotor and it started right up. Ever since then It has started running worse and worse. It starts fine but once moving it starts acting up. When I start going it seems like it is missing, it'll get to about 1500rpm and won't go any higherand starts bucking if I try to give it gas to go up a hill or something. Also when I stop at a light it will idle kinda rough and every 10 seconds or so it will surge like I was tapping the gas or something. I think it has something to do with the ignition but don't know much about that stuff. I need all the help I can get since I can't really afford to take it in to get it fixed so if you have any ideas PLEASE help me out.

my 74 z28 started doing that... it didnt die, when i put the dist. back in it ran like crap. it would idle, but when i gave it gas, it would bog and lose power like you wouldnt believe. some guys down the road showed me how to put it in right and.. to my amazement, set the timing better without using a timing light than i could with it... dont ask me how. so yea, check the timing, it (distributor) may have just turned a bit, and now it wont run

 

You might have moved the distributor out of time slightly when you were replacing the rotor if your hold down clamp isn't very tight. What it really sounds like to me though is a fuel pump problem. My buddy had an 86 IROC that acted a lot like that when his fuel pump was on its way out. You might want to pay a shop to replace it if it's bad. They're a royal pain in the a$$ to change even when you're quite proficient with the wrenches!
