305 possible 310 Tech question

I was wandering what could all be wrong with a motor that just smokes real bad? He says all thats wrong with it is the rings are shot but what else could be wrong? I've heard it run and goes strong just lack of power due to blow-by....what all would you guys do? Plus he only wants $125 for a 305 (possible 310) pushing 280 hp with a nice cam and forged pistons and vortec heads from what the guy before him told him. What do you guys think. He is giving me the motor (as is), the torque converter (2200 stahl), and a turbo 350 tranny thats blowed. Tell me what you guys think. Thanks alot Boes

If it's constant smoke, it could be rings. It could be a valve seal or guide. It could be a clogged PVC.

There are a lot of things that could be wrong with it.

Because it's a 305 (or 310) I'd pass it up. The only thing that may be worth $125 is the Vortec heads, but that's IF they're 350 heads (062, or 906) AND they're not cracked or badly warped.

Check the casting numbers on the heads (you'll have to pull of the valve covers) and get back to us.

could be pistons, it shouldn't be that hard to find a 305 someone would give you just to haul away

the smoking is only when you punch it. It doesn't smoke unless you wot it. I have no clue I also found out that it has a 2500 stahl (he gots the papers) and a 350 turbo tranny with a B&M shift kit in it. This all goes with it. And another thing the motor is a LG4 out of an 84 camaro that has $3000 worth of extras in it. What do you guys think yes or no?

Sounds worth it to me. Just get someone who knows trannys in there to make sure the tranny can actually be fixed. If it can, take the deal. $125 for $3,000 of mods, an engine, a stall, and a tranny is a good deal. Should be good for 14s if it has the right mods and you get a nice rear gear. Just keep in touch with the guy a lot, go there and see the parts often, and make sure that you don't get any bad feelings about it.
