can't find miss

swapped engines between cars, 86' 305 TPI, rebuilt the top end, springs and seals. The engine was smoking a bit before i pulled it.

There is no smoke on idle or anything. I have a miss now that i cannot find. I put on a new cap and rotor. The ignition coil is the original i beleive as well as the dist. The wires are on correctly. And i have tried jumping it teeth with no result. I twist the rotor to at least get it close and still nothing. Seems like a cylinder is not firing at the right time. I have no vacuum leeks.

have you actually tried to set the timing with a light? how do you know you don't have a vacuum leak? do you have fire at the end of each plug wire? have you check spark with a spark checker? valves adjusted right?

changed the wires today, some of the miss is gone. But is still missing. It has a searching idle as well. When i put it in gear it bogs down and wants to die.
