Auto Dimming mirror...
how does it work?

Elf magic, near as I can tell. I think it has something to do with ambient light levels vs. what's shooting at you through the rear glass from the car's headlights behind you.
My brother's 87 GTA had one, but it just used a little motor to tilt the mirror up into the "night" position when it thought it was appropriate- and it was kinda quirky. Seemed the little gear/motor would slip sometimes and not move the mirror. Tap it and it would work fine again for a few cycles before needing another tap.
Later models actually dimmmed it out using REAL magic that would actually darken the glass/mirror without moving it mechanically. Not sure if 3rd gen f-bodies ever got this or not. I know Caddys had it.

the later model dimming glass ones are the only ones ive ever seen.... and i know that the tech didnt exist for thoes when these cars were new....
so they just had a light sensor and a motor that tilted the mirror? wierd..... lmao..
