best stock GM intake for torque w/carb'd 305?
best stock GM intake for torque w/carb'd 305?
Any ideas what intake would make the most torque on a carburated 305? All that I know about the engine it would go on is that it is out of an '86 truck and will most likely keep the whatever cam and heads came stock on it. Just trying to find ideas on what junkyard cars/trucks to pull from.

GM OEM intake manifolds (SBC) are all the same, Dual Plane. If you want cheap, then the junkyard route is right. If aftermarket, you can't beat the price/performance of the Weiand Action+.

Your best bet would be to go with an aftermarket aluminum intake. You wouldn't lose any torque really and would pick up a lot more usable rpms to flatten out that torque curve. Intakes are cheap and clean and not warped or cracked if you get them at an autoparts store. IMO, the cam and exhaust have the biggest impact on torque curves... Just wait until you go take yours off the truck and you'll be happy you spent $20 more and bought one instead of removed a stock one yourself!

Thanks for the info guys. Personally, I've got the Action+ on my car. I was asking for a friend of mine who's planning on sticking a 305 in his toyota 4runner. Interesting that all the GM intakes are the same. Learn something new everyday....
Mike,
For under-5,500 RPM operation, the Edelbrock Performer is hard to beat. Combined with a 650 DP Holley (performance) or a 600 CFM vacuum secondary (mileage), you'll see +35 HP. Throw on headers and twice pipes and get another 15 HP.
Shop the swap meets and local papers - those parts are all over the place and they're dirt cheap. With some cleanup work, a shot of paint on the headers, and a rebuild kit for the used Holley - you'll do the whole shebang for $250 - $300.

The stock aluminum carb intakes from any 80s carbed car (even LG4s had 'em except for some early 82s and canadian cars) are a pretty decent piece (on a stock L69 with a good exhuast a buddy gained NOTHING in the 1/4 by swapping to a GMPP dual plane) and could probably be picked up for next to nothing. Just check it with a magnet, they generally look ugly with screwed up black factory paint on 'em, and even sometimes look rusty from intake/thermostat bolts rusting and eroding onto 'em. But they are aluminum...even my 83 grand prix LG4 has one.
