Back to the ford question...lol

Leave it to you guys to get totally away from the original question...haha

Anyways, I have a 1979 Ford Fairmont Stationwagon with the 302.. YES I SAID STATIONWAGON. That thing will keep up with most "sports" cars around here, be it a Fox body (mustang) or F-body(camaro). The only thing i can attribute to the power and reliability of the 302 is the years and years that it has been around. The 305 only came into the picture awhile after the 302. Ford kept refining the 302. They already had a good base motor and they made it better. As for GM making the 305 well i think they should just bring back the original 327 or even the V6 396 and a powerglide wouldnt be bad either......hmmm....i better stop before i get ideas.....lol well thanks for letting me blabber on...

How about since Ford went back to the 289
GM takes the 302 back???

Course that new 3.9 60* V6 sound interesting and may become a nice **** burner if it becomes more than a SUV gas saver.

They did???

A 3.55" bore/ 3.55" stroke 281 is hardly anything like a 4" bore/ 2.87" stroke 289,
except they're both less than 300 cid.

Chevy couldn't use a typical 302 in the later '70s and early '80s. Their average car weighed more than the "Small Two". That's because they had a real body and were a bit more stalwart. They still had full perimeter frames on most models. As a result, their heavier cars needed more torque to get them moving, thus the longer stroke, smaller bore. That's also the primary reason for the relatively low ratio first gear on the TH-700R4. The 305 bore/stroke was adequate in torque and more manageable for emissions due primarily to the smaller bore. Remember, this was all before decent electronic control systems, EFI, and better cat converters.

A typical 302 (Chevy or Ford) with it's relatively short combustion cycle inherently creates more emissions from less complete combustion. That's why the Ford 302 had to go "bye-bye" in 1996, when OBD-II took full effect, and stricter tailpipe emissions standards accompanied it. The dirty little engine couldn't cut it any more. Still, it lasted in production for almost 26 years - or about half as long as the basic SBC engine. Not bad for a Ford. We have to give it some credit. It was a good design for its time. Almost as good as a 327 or 350.

Well I just asume the 4.9l is the 289.
When the 5.0 was the 302.

Course by the math 4.9L is 299.0163 CI

The 5.0L is 305.1187 CI

Reverse the numbers and

the 302 is 4.948893L
the 289 is 4.735861L

Ok so Im really confused now???

So I guess the its still a "302" but with the proper liter rating???

Matt

Course we are talking about Ford here. Most people say once old man Ford died the company went south. On CNN yesterday they were saying because of the rise of imports we will end up with only 1 big Amercian company and they said it would be GM.

I have no problem with Ford, my friend has 4 mustangs, and they are nice cars. I will also give ford credit for one thing: they still make the mustang... what did GM do with the F-body?

Think you're a little mixed up man.... The Mustang motor is a modular SOHC or DOHC 4.6, not a 4.9. The 4.6 equates out to a 281. Only other current Ford motor that rings a bell is a 5.4, which goes into some of its trucks.

I gotta give Ford credit for the 03 Cobra SVT. Even though it's on a dated platform and isn't the most accomodating beast out there, it's one hell of a performance bargain. 390 hp, 390 ft lbs, 6 speed....low 13's in the 1/4. Can't beat it.

GM's giving it a run for the money though with the '04 GTO...but the GTO can't quite keep up with only 350 horses. The souped up 400 horse GTO though, coming out some time later, should be a nice contender. Who knows what'll happen to the Mustang power ratings though once the next generation debuts...

Yep - I have the first year of the moduar 4.6 SOHC in my 95 Thunderchicken.....valve seals were on thier way out at around 40,000 miles, and at 89,000 - it's no better!!

But it's always run smooth, doen't smoke (believe it or not) and really pulls nice as you wind it out...3 quarts between oil changes. And I change my oil every 3000....
