Air/fuel gauges modified?

Theres a few import guys modifying existing a/f gauges to read volts off the 02 sensor instead of showing a lean/rich condition. Check out www.gadgetseller.com/gauges to see what I mean if you want.

My question is, what is the advantage of knowing the voltage that your 02 sensor is putting out? Is there something I'm missing here? Should the 02 sensor be at a certain voltage...which would make constant analysis necessary?

Confused on this subject.

Well I'll be damned, the guy on that website has a good point. What he's done is narrow down the band that the air/fuel gauge works on. (All a/f gauges are voltmeters.)

He's showing how "out of the box", those meters show from 0 to 1.00 volts. After his change, the meters show from 0.77 to 0.96 volts. This way the gauge shows him 0.26 volts, at 0.02 volts/led. Out of the box, the gauges show 0.050 volts/led. He can now get greater accuracy.

I guess the Q left is "where do our sensors operate the most"?

And maybe, why doesn't he have a model with a switch for "normal accuracy vs. fine accuracy"?

He's making a more precise A/F meter, not a more accurate one. Greater precision is nice, but I don't think it makes the A/F gauge any more accurate as a tuning tool. There's no easy way to simply convert the O2 sensor voltage into an A/F ratio without knowing a host of other variables. At best it still only tells you if you're grossly rich or lean.

Eh, well, that's what I meant to say (precise). It's been a few years since Physics 1, I forget about that precision vs accuracy difference sometimes
