Starts great and dies

Short story long.

Bought an Autopac writeoff. $300 cdn. Starts and runs great for a few seconds and then dies. I can pump the gas pedal and that will keep it sputtering. Backfires the odd time.

85, 2.8L, 5 speed, 147,000Kilometres.

Gas gauge is low and I have no idea how long it sat. Probably a few months.

When I let it sit for ten minutes it fires right up and then, seems like, runs out of gas and dies.

Blows no smoke at all, runs great, but dies. I have zero, nadda, babe in the woods, experience with these cars.

Where is the fuel filter? When looking down, at what I assume is the fuel regulator, is the in line at the left or right standing on the driver's side?

Fuel filter is near the tank. Try holding it at about 2500-3000 RPM for about a minute or two, then slowly ease your foot off the gas, see if it will hold at idle.

his car is FI right? could it be the injectors are clogged or gunked up? Does it have gas? (sometimes the gas gagues read incorrectly) Not really sure, just putting some things on the table...

Sounds like the fuel pump is priming but not staying on. Could be the fuel pump relay, fuel filter, or a fuse.

Id try the fuses and the relay first.

Good ideas.

I have to work, so no time till Sunday.

It is always tough with a car you know nothing about, historywise.

Never mind it is an insurance write-off (smashed glass, stereo, steering column), the PO was poor on maintenance. Battery was dry, no water. Master cylinder was 90% empty. That is a weird one.

Keep the idea flowing.
