Death of an IROC, questions inside
Hey guys,
It's been a long time sence I posted last so I hope this works.
Last night I bought an '87 IROC to part out. It has a 305, a 5 speed, t-tops, and pwr windows/locks. My question is what all is IROC specific, and/or worth salvaging?
My plan is is to take the gauge cluster, aluminum radiator and quick ratio stearing box for my LT. I am going to take the 5 speed for my 53 chevy project, and hopfully trade the engine and fuel injection to a local street rod builder in exchange for some body work. I will also pull the t-tops, IROC wheels, and tailights to sell. I am I forgetting anything?
Lastly anyone know the best way to pull the fuel injection wiring harness?
Thanks

With a tag-line like that, you KNOW I had to come take a look at the topic...
You may be in luck. An '87 is a likely platform to have a Borg Warner 9-bolt rear axle. If that's the case, don't forget to salvage that. If it has disc brakes on that axle, it's probably worth more than your spare engine, and maybe more than what you paid for the car.
Every once in a while, a question arises about a used MAF sensor. ECM/wiring harness? Glass T-Tops? Good seats? Split rear fold-down seat? Rear wing spoiler? GFX?

The engine wiring harness can be pulled, but its not alot of fun. My friend and I did it on his 89 Firebird when we converted it from TBI to TPI. We had an 88 GTA donor car, which we took the harness from. There are actually 2 wiring harnesses under the hood, a chassis one, and an engine one. Basically, we just disconnected every plug, and slowly untangled the harness from everything and pulled it out. All the wires run to a big plug on the passenger side of the car, behind the fender. You'll need to get the fender off to get at this. There is another big plug on the firewall, beside all the relays, which is the one for the chassis stuff. I'm pretty sure we didn't have to remove that one for anything. The hardest part of the project was putting the TPI harness in his car, and figuring out where all the plugs went. Be burnt up a couple relays and lots of fuses in the process of doing that... I assume the car is TPI, which is worth some money. The TPI setup should bring a couple hundred dollars.

Thanks again guys, that is alot of help. Correct me if I'm wrong but the 'wonderbar' is a subframe brace right? I at one point had all this commited to memory, but then started this '53 project and things begin to blur.
Unfortunatly for the IROC, the second owner before me blew the rear end and replaced it with a junkyard find.. it has drum bakes, non-posi, and there is no sway bar left on the rear. The Interior is pretty rough, and just about every body panel is either rusted, dented, or damaged in some way (that inclueds the GFXs). Also the aluminum radiator I has hopeing to salvage, is bent and has had one of the cooling fans pushed into it.
I only payed $150 for the car though, so I am hopefull that selling/trading off parts I don't need will recover the cost. (and if I'm lucky, pay for any parts needed to put the 5 speed in the 53
)
