64 vette intake vs. modern aftermarket

question for anyone who feels like answering...

i scored a good running motor for my 87. its a mix of different parts. it is a 69 block with 70's heads and a 63-64 vette tall aluminum intake on it.

should i keep the vette intake? its pretty weird looking with the oil fill neck shooting out the front of it. i think i kinda like it. but would i be better off with a newer aftermarket intake than a 60's gm product? or should i not mess with whatever combo someone has built?

you can buy better intakes and you can get enough money out of that intake to buy several aftermarket intakes

You can block off the oil filler opening with a frost plug if necessary.

Unless you're running a tall hood you probably won't be able to run that intake with any kind of decent air filter - the manifold is probably much taller than a stocker or Performer.

I think ede is onto something, put the intake on e-bay and it may buy you an intake manifold that will fit under your hood and perhaps a pile of other speed parts.

well i did a quick ebay search... there are 2 of them up there right now and neither has a bid on it. lowest one starts at $125... doesn't look like anyone's buying at the moment.

i have a cowl hood so i'm not too worried about the height. i actually have an adapter plate for the edelbrock carb and air cleaner spacers on the car right now... i really dont think that intake would be a problem on my car.

the holley that came on the motor sits on there the way it normally would. i know i was scratching my head when i pulled it off and saw that weird opening pattern... i thought maybe it was originally 4 holes that someone grinded out but *shrugs*

Performance wise it was a good intake compared to the other ones avalible durring the 60's. BVy todays standards I doubt it would flow as much as a standard performer and thats only a tad better then stock. But yea its a nice find and will make a restoration owner very happy and they will probably be willing to drop a chunk of change on a OEM square bore intake. I wouldent doubt you getting $500 for it on ebay.

89RS, no the carb mounting is standard square bore, some aftermarket intakes still use the open port like that on one side.

A Performer or RPM will definitely outperform that old Vette intake.

On HP/TV they replaced an old 69 or 70 Chevy big block intake and carb with modern pieces. The increase in hp was HUGE ... around 100 hp or so.
