cam for my 383???
cam for my 383???
hi i have an 89 gta which has been sitting for almost a year now (started in feb) since i ran out of money. but my original plan was going to be a 383 tpi setup with vortec heads....etc...like Mike Crews in his thread. but all this time sitting i started wanting more power, and i think i'm going to end up with...
383 stroker (cast crank, 6 inch forged rods, 10 to 1 hyper pistons)
180cc proaction heads (should i trade back for 200cc??)
miniram intake
1.5 RR
the question i have is that i bought the zz409 cam already before really thinking about it. should i buy the zzx cam instead? and get bigger valve springs (they only handle .550 lift).
i'm looking to keep this car streetable as well as 11 second et's.
any help would be great,
thanks
Jason

my 383 has AFR 210 heads, and the cam is .600 lift, and 308 deg duration (248 at .050)
go with the 200cc or 215 cc with your setup your going to go through rpms fast, so you want somthing that wll pull hard at least to 6500 rpm,as the cam goes ,i dont no the specs on that cam, but i would go with a 230 236 and 550 lift

If I remember correctly, the ZZ409 cam is 226/226 @ 0.050", and about .525 lift using 1.5 rockers - you will have to change your springs, which is not a major problem at all.
Since you are using a cast crank, don't spin the motor past 6200, which is exactly where the ZZ-X camis gonna make its peak power, which means its not the right cam for you. The cam you have should make peak power around 5500-5700 in a 383 with the right intake. Power should be in the range of 400-450 depending on your intake, exhaust, and tuning. Plan to run a 3-1/2" exhaust minimum and an good electric fuel pump - a stocker won't cut the mustard. The heads should be fine at that power level.
You can easily make it into the 11's with 450hp, btw.

Keep the 409 cam. it is capable of 500 horspower. with your set up it should peak at 5500-5800 rpm. i've seen a 383 with afr 187cc heads, miniram, 11.0-1 compression, and 1.6 rrs make 501 horspower at 5500 rpm with that cam.
