No EGR = more knock?
My local mechanic friend told me that a 330hp engine could be made to pass but without EGR it's hard. He told me that it would fail the knock sensor test. Something about the combustion chambers being cooler with EGR. How can I get this vortec headed 330hp 350 to pass the knock sensor test? He told me that visually it can be overlooked which is my hint but then he told me about the EGR stuff. I really don't want to spend $500 more on an engine that makes only 285hp when the 330hp is only $2100. Please help me out on this or I'm going to have to claim residency in Ohio (go to Ohio State for school).

Knock test? Uh, Ive never heard of such a thing
The chip advances timing for when the egr is on because the egr allows for more spark advance, without egr and with it disabled in the chip your engine isnt any more prone to knock than it was before with the advanced timing and EGR
It cools the combustion chamber some to lower NOX readings but any decent catalytic converter cleans it up to an extent that its not an issue in my opinion

There is a knock test that few people really know about, but it IS NOT with the EGR! The EGR is an emissions item.

My ZZ4TPI with dual cats passed Florida emissions. (no working egr)
My 92Z28convt passed with no cat, but all other emission stuff working.
The ZZ4TPI was cleaner then the 92305TPI.

I installed a performance resource chip last year. (Made a nice improvment BTW)It not only deleted the EGR but increased my part throttle/wot timing. I had no problems with knock, until recently when a few injectors decide to take a crap.
Like Rob..I passed Florida emissions with no problems. They quit testing this year though! wooohhhooo!!

Jon,
I havent been through NJ inspection since last january when i bought my car. with my stock LG4, it passed the new emissions testing no problems. i dont go back till 8/01 so im not sure what they are doing now. (i probably wont pass w/ my carbed out/cammed out 350 now) but i dont think they are doing visuals for emissions equip. at this time. they looked undert the hood of my friend's bronco...but they were lookin at the brake booster. anyway, if you have a good running car it should pass w/o EGR and i dont think there is anything called a knock test here. the only knock they will bitch about is from a broken engine/tranny mount. but one thing, if you are getting detonation you gotta fix it

I don't know exactly what he was talking about either but he did say knock and he told me that the cars without EGR like some of the old minivans and small cars. They don't pass emissions here in NJ but they get away with it because they're an exception to the rules. I know they don't do visual because he said that no EGR wouldn't be the problem. He said that since it won't have EGR, the knock will be worse and that will be the trouble area. I have a 3" cat and all the equipment working to ensure a pass. I think I'm just going to do it anyways and if it doesn't pass I'll try and find a place that'll let it slide on that one test. If that doesn't work I'm going to claim residency in Ohio and get an Ohio license so I can have cheaper insurance and definatly pass. JEGS is only a mile down the road from where I live in Ohio :-).

Pablo mentioned NOX.. maybe the guy was refering to NOX coming from the tail pipe and failing the sniffer test. Thats different than the ESC failing the knock test. That can cause the car to go to a fixed set of values for spark and fuel. It would run rich then, and probably fail the sniffer test. Anythings possible I didnt have a problem deleting my EGR. I even passed the sniffer test, with a 406 with no EGR or cats. It was high but I still was within limits. It has to be in good tune though.

I'm sure it's not NOX. I'm positive he was talking about engine knock and the how EGR cools down the combustion chambers since there is less air and fuel thanks to the warm intake charge being less dense. That is what I figured and it all makes sence if you think about it. I'd just like to know what he was talking about the actual testing for engine knock. Wouldn't the knock only be displayed with an SES light? If that's the test then I think I can pass since trucks have vortec headed engines. They don't have a problem so why should I. Just need to get the correct sensor right?
