Emissions

A friend of mine who's been known to tell BS once said that by the year 2006 all emissions requirements will be dropped since cars coming out after that year will be so clean that they'll be way within regulations.

Has anybody else heard anything about this? If it's true I'll start saving for a big block to drop in my third gen. heh

I have not heard of anything like that.

The emmision program will be aroung for a long while due to the fact that they aren't so worried about the new cars, they are worried about the older cars. (74 and up)

Even if all the new cars were electric I would still be smogging older cars.

Hey Engineboy, how old does a car have to be to be exempt from emissions? I have a friend that has an old superbee that doesn't have to have emissions. Are there any other stipulations that can exempt you from emissions? Motor swap e.t.c. (probably wishful thinking I know) Reason I ask is because I have never had to have emissions tested here. I know it varies from state to state but the basics must be the same huh? I swear I am gonna make me a bolt in converter...

Here in CA, all cars '73 and older are exempt. Smog stuff first appeared on '68 cars, but catalytic converters first appeared in '74, which is why they picked that year.

Never heard such a thing (about emissions being dropped in general) and I highly doubt it. Your friend is either "wishfully thinking" or BSing you. Ask him to state the specific article that he is quoting.

As for what the emission regs are, you have to check with your state or province. Here, in BC, they are looking at a "clunker law" where regardless of year of manufacture, the car MUST meet certain minimum standards or be scrapped.

The only exception will be "Colllector Cars" which get a special licence plate. Collector cars have special requirements in order to qualify and specific limitations prohibiting you using them as a daily driver. If it is a daily driver, then you must meet the minimums.
