oil overfull

How big of a deal is it if the oil is overfull by a 1/4" on the dip stick?

Like 1/4 of a quart over the full line? No problem.

1/4 of the dipstick, you might have some problems.

If it's 1/4 of the dipstick, just drain off some from the pan, check level, repeat until desired level is reached.

Or you could remove the oil filter, drain it, and reinstall it rather than trying to guess by removing the oil drain plug.
