what is this and what is it for?

I was just wondering what the heck the black canister on the passengers side valve cover is and what its needed for. Anybody know? Thanks

Ive heard it called a smog canister, or charcoal canister. Emissions stuff Anyone else?

Well, without seeing any pictures of this cannister and the fact that you say it is on the passenger side valve cover, I would have to say it is probably a breather assembly for the crankcase.

I'm guessing you're talking about the diverter valve for the air pump. It's a black cube-like box on the passenger side, next to the valve cover. So it's for emissions if that's what you're talking about.
