TPI intake reassembly questions...>>>

Let's face it - it's COLD here in northern IN! I'm about to reinstall my freshly hot-tanked manifold and TPI parts and I'm wondering whether the cold will cause problems with sealing, torque or other aspects. I don't think it's any coincidence that we're seeing all these broken/stripped bolt posts (myself included) this time of year. Specific questions are: I have a new set of runner bolts and I'm not sure which length bolts go to which holes. Also, is the IAC adjustable? I've cleaned all carbon in the passage but should I do anything to the motor itself? Also, I'm using permatex ultra blue around water passages, right stuff for the china walls, and hi tack to keep the gaskets in place, and some silicon thread sealant on the intake bolts; will the cold adversely affect any of these products? Thanks a lot for any help or advice.

The longer bolts are the ones that have to thread through to the intake runners. As for the throttle plate collant gaskets there is a kit avalible from the dealer for about $25. Take my advice and get it. I attempted to reuse a gasket (which was in good shape/the part was not avail throgh auto parts store) this summer and had to replace it. It's just not worth the headache. As soon as I got the car together I had to take it apart.

I'm not sure I understand but I've replaced all the gaskets. I have a new kit with all the runner to plenum and runner to manifold bolts and they are at least 3 different lengths. I know someone had this same question a long time ago but it must have been prior to how far back the current archives go...

From what I remember the shortest ones go on the top with the exception of few bolts. You can visually inspect the intake runners and look fot the thicker bolt flanges. Remember the four longest go on the bottom.

U ROCK,

It's not much warmer here, and the snow's getting deeper.

You mentioned all the goop, gunk, and Preparation H that you are putting on everything as you assemble, and you even noted the number of stuck bolts we've been discussing. After all that, you didn't mention the anti-seize you are applying to all the fasteners that don't get sealant. You are using anti-seize, aren't you?

As far as the bolt lengths, the longer ones are used for the "inside-out" positions on the lower ends of the runners. You can use the runners to determine where all the rest go. Install the bolts in a loose runner (off the engine) and arrange them so that the same amount of bolt protrudes from the back flanges of the runners at each location. The upper holes on the outer ends get fairly short bolts. The bolts that install from the outboard sides of the runners at the lower holes are also short. The center bolts on the upper ends are longer, and the one with the barbed stud over the hex head goes on the upper center hole on the left (driver's) side. If in doubt, fit them all as described above in a loose runner set to check lengths.

Hey IROCK, you ought to use the "Right Stuff" for your water passages also. It seals them better than Ultra Blue. I had a water pump start leaking on me recently that I had sealed with Ultra Blue. I've never had anything leak yet that I've sealed with Right Stuff.
