Smoke... Causes? Fixes?
Smoke... Causes? Fixes?
Ok I've had a little bit of smoke for the last month or so. White smoke and some water drops. It smokes all the time, on startup, idle, normal driving, WOT.
92 L98, 133,000 miles. I'm thinking it might be a head gasket? It didn't start smoking any until after I gutted my cat's. However I think its just a coincidence.
Also as the motor get warmer the amount of smokes leaving the exhaust gets greater.
So what does this sound like?

Well gray smoke could be either too rich a fuel mixture or oil being burned. I think you are having a little oil bypassing your pistion rings. Check your oil everyonce in a while and see if your losing some. Usually a rich fuel mixture is black smoke but I have seen it gray before if its not bad. I don't think its a head gasket cuz you would have water in your oil and that will definatly be noticable on you dip stick, I think it turns white. But since you have high milage its a good chance your piston rings are just worn

Ya know I just realized something... I didn't get smoke until my last oil change... Normally I run Valvoline Synthetic, but my last change I had my grand parent pick my up some synthetic oil and they got some other brand and didn't want to take it back so I used it anyhow. Oh I didn't have any oil loss before. I've had some with this new oil. Also the smoke has gotten progressivly worse. Maybe its possible that some additive in the oil caused damage or maybe something in the oil is burning off?

CHANGE YOUR OIL NOW!!! you can go from convential oil to synthetic but you can never go back to convential oil once you have used synthetic!! If you do all your seals and your pistion rings will let oil by causing what you are seeing now. If you change it now you can hope for the best but definatlly get that conventional oil out and get you some synthetic because if you don't it will gradually get worse.
Uh re-read, the type in it is synthetic. Just not one of the prefered brands such as Mobil or Valvoline.
However I am start to be very very sure that this oil in my car has something to do with it, since when I ran with my Valvoline I never had any smoke, not one bit.
