I have been thinking of adding a new cam and surfacing the heads on my 85 Iroc-z. I was told by a local mechanic that I would have to replace the ECM in the car to handle the upgrades. No expert here but it's my understanding the ECM will compensate for mild modifications with no objections. I would imagine as long as you don't go with too wild a cam grind,meaning sticking w/computer compatible grinds. Also, an aftermarket chip,(or custom)would let you get away with a little more. I'm running the Hypertech Street chip w/many small mods, (intake, pulleys,ignition,exhaust,etc.)with no computer problems.
