85 TPI (305) Coolant Temp Sender?

Hello,

My first post here so I aplogize in advance if I'm doing something wrong...

I just got my hands on an 85 IROC-Z with a TPI 305 (VIN code F). The car runs just great, but the temp gauge and oil pressure gauge stay pegged no matter what. I have a new oil pressure sender to swap in to try solving the oil pressure problem, but I cannot locate the coolant temperature sensor on this car. The dealer does not list a part # for a "F" engine code without NB1 on the SPID tag (like my car). So where does the gauge get a signal from? Anybody have this problem before?

Thanks in advance!

There's a lot of info on this subject in the cooling section, but as ede says on the driver's side of the engine between the front 2 exhaust outlets should be a sender, with a single connection. This is for the temp gauge. There are other temp senders/switches on other bits of the engine for fans etc have a look through the cooling section for loads of detail.

another possibility is that the guage itself is physically stuck up there. i have an 85 iroc and this happened to me once where the needle just kindof got wedged up there and i had to take the cover off the guage cluster to push it back down.

Yep, that's it. Hangs up there every time on startup. Will order a new gauge today...

Thanks!
