HOW DO I CHANGE SPEEDOMOTER CLUSTER?

please post asap, im in the process of doing this RIGHT NOW, ill keep refreshing, i got a new 145 MPH gague cluster for my 82 Z.. i took off the cover, undid the bolts, and my whole cluster is coming out like it should, except right on the backside of the speedo, where the cable connects, i cannot get that undone, and there is no way to get my hands in there, thats the only thing stopping it from coming out, the wire that goes directly to the back of the speedo, please help ASAP on how to get that off and put that wire back on the new one, ill keep watching!!! thanks so much

I pull the cluster out as far as I can, then I squeeze my hand up in there. there is a little slack in the cable that you should be able to pull out. It's a tight fit, but you just need to use your fingertip to push the little tab in that locks the cable into the speedo head. You'll have to push it in toward the speedo head. You may also be able to go from under the dash and snake your hand up in there.

To put it back in, the cable should just push back on and snap into the retainer clip. After you get the old one out, you'll be able to see how the clip works.

Good luck!

You can try making some more slack in the speedo cable behind the dash by pulling the cable housing through the grommet in the firewall a little more.

The only way I could undo the cable from the speedo in my IROC was by lying on the drivers seat with my head under the steering column and feet over the headrest. I had already loosened the cluster and pulled it as far out as it would come, which was only an inch or less. Then I jammed my hand up behind the damn thing and pressed the diamond shaped clip that secures the cable housing to the speedo. Be prepared to ignore a fair bit of pain and utter a few choice cuss words as you wiggle your hand up into that tiny space. The cable housing comes off real easy once you have the clip pressed down.

BTW, I have a question too. How do I undo the two halves of the cable housing? I need to find out why my speedo won't work. I've tried everything to undo but no luck so far. It seems jammed or rusted shut.

1. It is very easy to get to the speedo cable from above; in the time it takes to wigge under the dash, find the thing up in that mass of scmutz, and utter a few appropriate words, I would have already had the dash pad off and my hands still clean.

2. ¿2 halves of the cable housing? What do you mean?
