THE F-BODY LIVES!!!!!!

Im sure this i sthe wrong place for this but owell, I just got the new autoweek and in it, there a message about the F-body, and i quote:

"Chevy's Camaro and Pontiac's Firebird won't be eliminated as long as they're profitable and require no additional investment, says General Motors North America presesent Ron Zarrella.
Whacking Oldsmobile and other models will slash GM's model lineup from 110 to 63 models in a couple of years, but the long in tooth muscle cars will earn a stay of execution as long as they can make money"

Car Craft has a much more dismal outlook. On page 24 of their latest issue they say this:

"RUMOR: GM's withdrawal of the Camaro and Fierbird from IHRA Pro Stock racing clearly indicates the fate of those cars. They're dead."

It's not really technical....but, it certainly IS a better message than the gloom-and-doom rumors we've been hearing lately.

I think we should all put Mr. Zarrella on our greeting card lists.

The latter part of the statement is not highly specific, but what I interpret the "no additional investment" to mean is that we won't see any major redesign of the model any time soon. That means it will probably remain a front engine/rear live axle two-door for quite some time. I'll take a solid rear axle as the penalty for having a rear-drive V-8 any day.

There may be some cosmetic changes in the future, but the heart of the beast will remain the same. Think about it. V-8s will still be produced in large numbers for trucks and other cars, and changing from a rear drive design would be a considerable retool expense, since the line is already designed to use solid rear axles that are being made by the millions for mid-sized and large trucks and vans. The transmissions are the same as in the trucks and vans, and all R&D is done on those items. Sit back, assemble, and make money. Stamp some new-looking sheet metal once in a while, and keep tweaking the suspension and steering. I think there might be a market for such a vehicle.

Well, I hate to see the f-body (and *the* only car in my opinion) die, if even take a year off, but it is only a number of years before mass production gasoline powered engines cease to exist, and it will certainly fall within my lifetime. The technology is there to eradicate useless (only in *their* opinion) internal combustion engines, and so it will be done. In the meantime, hey, tires are dirt cheap. Light 'em up. They should make a hall of fame for ****** like BOR. =)

Hype,
1983 Pontiac TransAm. 305ci of gas burning pleasure with numerous goodies. Running flat 14's on the *** -dyno, waiting for next season or a g-tech to time with my WorldTorquer 305's. I love Christmas.
