How can I test the egr?
I'm not sure how to test this thing. Oh, and I don't have a vacuum gauge - will I need one?

i believe the quick and easy way is to reach up o nthe under side and put your finger in the little cut out and press on the diaphram and the engine should run worse, or die. if it does it works. not sure about the newer ecm controled egrs with otu digging out a manual and it's too cold to go to the garage.

hmmm well mine is computer controlled with that damn solenoid that makes getting to the distributor hold down bolt a lot less fun. I posted that basically to try to eliminate my egr as a possiblity for why my car won't stay running. Can I plug the egr temporarily or will this make the car die? Or should I leave it open? I know that a fully open egr at idle will make the car die, is there any way to force it closed for diagnostic purposes? Thanks a lot.

To see if you are getting vacuum to the egr, and exactly when, tape a long tube to the vac hose from the egr, and route the hose into a window , and while you drive the car, you can put your thumb over the tube end, and see exactly when, if ever, there is vacuum there. I actually did this once.
There was only a slight vacuum, and only on light acceleration, at high speeds,as I recall .
Of course the egr could be carboned up. The way to check that is by pushing up on the diaphragm in the egr, and making the car run rough, as someone already mentioned.
