camshaft and intake

Hi,
I have a TA 85 305 lg4. Need some tips on choosing a cam and intake. I think I like Edelbrocks performer cam and intake. Does anybody have experience of these parts? Is the intake a stock-replacement compatible with EGR etc?

You should have a factory aluminum intake already, it is a good piece. I would keep that factory part, and put the money you were going to spend on an intake manifold into a set of headers.

The performer cam will give you a nice kick in the pants, if you install headers. Upgrade the rest of the exhaust, and you will see how much fun these cars really are.

You will probably want to do something with the air cleaner, as it is very resrictive. I would suggest a cold air package resembling the L69. Others like the open element.

These parts have proven reliable and street friendly in my car, results may vary, see your dealer for details...

Just my opinion, and I could be wrong.

nope, its cast iron, but its not the bottleneck of the LG4

with an LG4, don't waste money on a cam and intake. thats a big DO NOT.

the biggest gains to be found on a LG4 are full exhaust, from the engine to the tail pipe.

get a good set of headers. if you need to stay emissions legal(hooker 2550's, they come with a y-pipe for $400) and if your Don't have emissions testing go and want to save some money ( go with the heddman shorties + the ypipe $240 together)

then get a good hi-flow catalytic converter. carsound(magnaflow) makes a nice one, catco, and random technologies do too.

then get a cat-back exhaust system, hooker, borla, flowmaster, dynotech, pick your poison, they are all good.

all that together will give you an easy 30+ rear wheel horsepower. not magazine horsepower, but realility horsepower.

then after all that, if you choose to install a cam, it will take advantage of the exhaust, and the engines new ability to breathe better, and make more power then it would on its own.

as for a cam, i would reccomend a comp cams XE256 for a 305, maybe a XE262, but that would be a little lumpy. do a search, others have had great results with both.

save the intake manifold as one of the last things to do. until you either port/polish & install bigger vavles in the heads you have now, or get new heads, a new intake is not going to make really much more power. neither is a new carb.

but yeah.... exhaust is the way to go. RB83L69 preaches about it all the time for LG4 owners, and he is 110% correct.

also, look into a dual snorkal style air cleaner. there is a tech article on the thirdgen.org main page about how to make one, or i think there is a couple aftermarket ones, or try and find one at the junkyard from L69 equipped cars. from what i hear, a dual snorkal cleaner flows much better than the stock one.
