Help me out with my new top end...
I'm looking very seriously into buying a set of AFR heads, Accel Intake Manifold, and Camshaft for my 92 GTA in the next 3 weeks.
I'm on kind of a budget, don't want to spend too much or more than I need, and I want the most bang for my buck.
Here is my list so far, please review it and give me your thoughts on the parts and the combo. To see my current mods, check my sig.
Competition Package CNC Ported Heads:
AFR 195cc C.A.R.B. Heads, L98 Angle Plug w/heat riser, 58cc P/N: 1094*
Intake Valve, 2.020", Exhaust Valve, 1.600"
What is the above going to do to my compression ratio? What size gaskets should I use? I'd like the highest compression I can get without milling the heads but 10:5 is the max.
Accel TPI Intake Manifold, port matched to my SLP runners and to the AFR's. I'm also going to post match my plenum to my runners.
Camshaft, haven't choose one yet. I need to be CA smog legal, so that means my vacuum has to be inline with spec and it can't sound like a NASCAR motor, other than that CA doesn't care. Also timing needs to of course be within spec. I want an aggressive idle and powerband up to atleast 5500. I also plan on running 1:6 rockers, self adjusting, and use the AFR Hydra-Rev kit.
I also figure I need an AFPR and MAYBE larger injectors. Plus what will all this equal out to in terms of adjusting my PROM setup?
I know this is allot of questions but just chime in with whatever suggestions you guys have please...

if you're on a budget, id skip the 1.6s if you already have roller rockers... if not, get 1.5s if it would save you money..... my reason for saying that is, if you're chosing the cam anyway, you could make up the diff in the cam, instead of the rocker....
if they're the same price and you dont have rollers, ignore me.

Here is the email I just sent them:
-------------------------------------------------------
"Here is what I currently have:
1992 TPI 305ci (LB9) Trans Am GTA (F-Body)
Motor is stock (for now) except for SLP Intake Runners
Stock Compression 9.3:1
I'm going to buy an Accel Intake Manifold and an aftermarket camshaft, specs yet to be decided. It is a street legal car that must be CA smog legal (IE: C.A.R.B.) but it is rarely driven on the street but raced at the track often.
I would like your advice on which of your SBC heads to buy. I have SLP Tri-Y shorty 1 5/8" headers so for that I need whichever plug angle you suggest. I want to get your best C.A.R.B. heads, your Competition Package CNC Ported Heads w/heat riser. Also they of course need to be center bolt. I want the heads already pre-assembled, perfect to a "T" and ready to go. Also I'd like to end up with atleast 10:1 compression, 10:5 is what I want though, so I will need them milled for that spec and intake angle for the Accel intake along with your recommended size gasket for that compression ratio.
So which of your heads should I buy (190, 195's, etc) and how much will it be total, including Tax (Im in CA also), and shipped to:
**** **** **
**** ********* CA *****
Thanks and advance and I look forward to doing business with you."
-------------------------------------------------------
I'll post what they tell me.
Anyway, I still need advice on a camshaft and whether of not I really need bigger injectors although I think the AFPR will be enough.
On the 1:5 or the 1:6 rocker thing, what I really want it a cam that will just barley pass CA smog with the stock 1:5's but then after I smog it (only once every 2 years!) I can put the 1:6's on it and it and just be ***** out, sound wicked and haul a$$...

Hey Alex
consider the 180CC AFR with a ZZ4 cam or one of the smaller Comps.
The reason why I say the ZZ4 cam is one, it really wont have a rad idle (CA smog freindly sound
) and two your SLP prom will be fine with it, but Im sure a AFPR is a must have. I really would not go much lower CC than stock as you dont want the prom to remove advance if it detect knock.
If you have someone or you can burn a DIY prom for a bigger cam, Id say go for it, but Im sure CA will listen for a lope.
let us know what you decide.
PS how is the speedshop moving along. Remember you have to bug your banker almost daily, sounds like he used the my underwriter crap excuse again
dont worry it will work out.

i'd do a bit more research on the angle plugs, there tends to be clearance issues with headers. i'd run a coated gasket and not worry about picking up a small bit more compression. i'd look at buying the heads bare and putting manely valves in and valve springs and retainers to match your cam.

I agree whole heartedly with the AFR 180 heads and the ZZ4 cam. They flow almost as good as the larger heads and will maintain good port velocity with your TPI. Stock compression is 9.3:1 with the iron heads and 64cc chambers. I would guess with the 58cc chambers you will be around 9.9:1 which is not bad for a street car. If you go with a thinner head gasket I would not want to go over 10.2:1 with the 91 octane gas that is commonly available in California. Don't forget the AFPR. Allen

Thanks for the input so far guys!
I'll see what AFR says in their response as far as the exact valve size.
True about the compression.
Actually CA doesn't really car THAT much about the lope from what I'm getting talking to smog shops. They all say they won't care unless it's to the point where I fail idle portion of the sniffer test or if I idle about 1200 just to stay running.
I'm going to trust AFR on telling my what plug angle to use, I'd expect them to be familiar with SLP headers in a TPI F-Body...
Sorry but I definantly do not want bare heads. I'm not going to be so crazy that I think I will need aftermarket parts on the heads, just being CA legal limits me on that...

Hey now what about the LT4HC or something like that? I plan on burning a custom PROM so that is not an issue, it's just that with AFR heads I'd think I'd get more with the LT4HC???
I'm also thinking the Comp XR264HR, 212°/218° & .520"/.528" with 1.6 rockers is also a good choice.
I'm gonna have to wait for AFR to get back to me so I can get the specs on the head they suggest and plug that along with all the different cams into Dyno2003 and see what that says...
