Does anyone know how to tune computer controlled distributors?
I am running a holley mechanical carb, so no fuel injection or emission limits. I have a few questions about these distributors, any input is appreciated. Thanks.
1. How much computer advance is there on top of the initial advance?
2. What rpm does total timing come in at?
3. What controls part throttle advance? TPS on the carb?
4. Are there any limits to these distributors besides the obvious? I mean like limits to how far I can advance it?
------------------
1986 CAMARO Z28 -> 151,000 original miles, 43,000 on 89' vette 350 block, Holley 650 DP, Weiand intake, 1.6 rockers, 1 5/8" headers, no cat, 2 1/2" Flowmaster catback, Mallory coil, March pulleys, T5 with 3.35 1st gear and 0 miles, 90% Centerforce clutch, 3.73 posi, Eibach 1" drop springs, Spohn LCA's, Spohn adjustable panhard rod, Subframes connectors, polyurethane swaybar bushings/endlinks, 2 12" Sound Streams, 2 Infinity 6X9's, 2 Pioneer 6X9's, 800 watt Lanzar Vibe amp. ET 13.22@ 106.4MPH Next mods-> Homemade ram air, B&M shifter, Extreme Energy 230/236 cam.

With a Holley mechanical carb, the answers to your questions go something like this:
1. Zero.
2. Idle.
3. You got it. Actually, the ECM using the signal from the TPS controls it over the entire RPM range.
4. Primary limit being it won't work properly with a Holley mechanical carb.
Theoretically, you could set the initial advance at 36 degrees BTDC and keep the RPM's above 3k all the time and make decent runs. Bottom line in the real world: The CC distributor will not work properly with your carb. You need to go get a mechanical/vacuum advance distributor. Take your choice: Stock HEI (with proper upgrades, of course), aftermarket HEI (Accel, Petronix, etc.), aftermarket replacement (MSD, Accel, Mallory, etc.).

Take 5-7's advice. The only thing that computer controlled distributor is good for now is a shotput competition. You need a good old fashioned HEI with centrifugal and vacuum advance. All you need is a 12 volt power supply, and I'm sure you have a vacuum port on that Holley for the advance.

Come on guys do you really think I'd be running a 13.2 with no advance????? I noticed a large improvement over the q-jet just swapping the holley in, and the q-jet was modified too. I think the carb only controls part throttle advance. I think the advance rate is set in stone regardless.
Are you 100% positive? Sorry for being skeptical but I don't want to buy one if it only ends up being one more thing I have to **** with.

Yes I have the computer, I have everything but the carburetor.

Grab a timing light and see for yourself. Start at idle, see where the timing is. Run the RPMs up slowly and watch the timing mark. Go back to idle, gun it while watching the timing mark.

Without the data from the TPS, you will get ZERO advance beyond initial.
I went through all this BS on mine, and when I put in my Vaccum advance Dist, Wow what a Differance.
Maybe you just found your Ticket to the 12's!

I wish I could check it for myself but my car is stored for the winter. I'm doing a cam install this spring and I don't want to waste my time if the distributor is hindering performance.
I can see what you are saying and I want to believe it, but it's very hard for me to with all the factors weighing in. I already run with new vettes with only ~300hp. I've never seen a combo like mine make over 325hp either. I'll check it before I tear into it just so everyone knows as proof.
One thing I forgot to mention before. When I first put the new carb on I noticed a stumble, (cruising at a steady speed), when I would initially tip into the gas. After a week or so the stumble went away, it was like the computer learned or something. Who knows I'll check it out in the spring.
