Horrible smoke and squeal upon startup

I have been driving my car for the past week with a strange problem that I asked about in a previous post.. but other than that, everything was fine. Well I drove to the store, and when I got back in afterwards, when the car started there was a horrible squealing noise, and when I rev'd it a bit to see if it would go away, smoke started coming out.. smelled alot like burning tires. I figured out that the smoke was coming from a belt attached to some sort of pulley below the alternator on the passenger side of the engine (I believe I have v-belts.. 86 iroc, 305tpi. am I right?)

It seems as though whatever this thing is that the belt is attached to has stopped moving, and the belt is still being pulled around it causing it to melt. I don't dare drive the car like this, I'm afraid it will melt into something and cause much worse problems.

Can anyone help me out here? At the very least, could anyone post a picture of the belt setup I have described and label the attachments to the belt assembly? It would help a great deal in assessing the problem and possibly fixing it myself.

Thanks in advance

Did it have hoses coming to and from it? Sounds like it might be your smog pump....if your year HAD smog pumps. It's an emissions control device that can be removed.

If it's on the bottom side I believe it has to be either the power steering or the smog pump. If it's the PS pump it'll have a dipstick/fill tube.

Thats the smog pump.

Take the damned thing off if you don't have to worry about emmisions. If emmisions is a problem, replace it.
