Quick cam installation question.....

I was reading Phil Parsons' in car cam installation article and it reads:

"Once the engine fires, keep it running between 1800 and 2200 rpm for a minimum of 18-20 minutes, varying the rpm between that range so that oil is splashed on the cam completely. Do not let the rpm's drop, because the excessive friction will destroy the cam. Once the break in period is over, shut it down, change the oil...."

My question is, since the cam I have is a hydraluic roller, is that break in period needed, or is it just for flat tappet cams?

Dan,

That method is used to polish/break in the mill-finished lobes on flat-tappet camshaft installs. Your roller replacement should have had a fininsh already ground onto it, and should require no special break-in procedures other than the customary oil change requirements for breaking in any freshly built engine.

As always, follow the instructions provided with the camshaft. Lacking instructions, roller cams generally do not require this break-in prodcedure.
