difference between a regular 305 and the Iroc 305HO
Does anyone know where the extra horsepower is coming from between a regular camaro 305 and an High output Iroc 305? I have a wonderful rod knocking in my engine, but have a spare 305 thats been recently rebuilt that I would consider using temporarily till I can afford a new engine. The only catch is I dont want to lose what horsepower I have now. Thanks in advance.

If you're talking about the 2 carbed engines, the regular one was 145 HP and the HO was 190 HP. There are alot of differences, starting with the pistons and cam. The heads and intake are the same. Numerous external things are also different; the exhaust from manifolds to bumper, the carb, air cleaner, etc.
I would guess the different compression is probably 15 of the missing HP. Depending on how much of which engine you use, you may come up with any amount of power between 45 and 15 HP less than the HO motor had.

The new 305 is one that a friend of mine had from his 87-88 Monte Carlo. The 305 that is in my Camaro now is the TPI 305 HO. I need to steal my heads from the TPI and intake, and other than that, I have a complete motor. does the HO have a different cam that I need to take?

There is a difference in the 87-92 305 TPI engine. There is a 350 cam, and a 305 cam that you can have. From 87-89, all 305 TPI 5-speeds have the 350 cam, and all 305 TPI automatics have the 305 cam. This 305 cam is also used in the 305 TBI. So the 305 engine with the 350 cam is the "HO", but its not refered to as such.
