Intolerable no start situation

Lets cut to the chase.

1991 RS, 305 TBI, 5 speed.

Sometimes, the car simply will not turn over. I was teaching my friend how to drive stickshift today and the car was running fine. Then we came home, parked it and went in for some lunch. Then, I came back out and the car would not turn over. NO clicking or anything. All you could hear was the electric fuel pump initiating toward the rear of the car.

Then, I let it rest for 20 minutes, I went back outside and it fired up like nothing had happened. I can't handle this crap anymore. I dont know what to do. Its so incredibly RANDOM, and makes me hate my car.

Its not the battery. The dome lights work, stereo plays.

Also note, the car has to have the clutch down to start. I had it completely pinned but no dice. Then I came back out and it fired up. RANDOM. Any advice? Anyone have this problem with 91-92 Maros?

No cranking? Probably not an ignition module problem causing that.

Clutch safety switch problem, VATS system (what does the SECURITY lamp do?), starter solenoid heat soak failure, ignition switch problem (does the lamp check function amd temperature gauge peg to full hot?), or fusible link heat failure.

One of those should get you close.

Vader, Im leaning towards this because it seems to only happen when the engine is hot, or has been ran. Its super random. But when it "cools" I guess, it fires up like nothing ever happened.

Is this a huge fix?

it can be.. by anychance do you have headers?

what it usually is, is the hot exhaust pipes heat up the starter.... and when its too hot, the resistance is high, and it doesnt start.

a starter heat shield can fix that.... or wrapping the headers with header wrap....

the most expencive option is to replace the starter with a mini starter....
