Usually 882 smog heads with 76 cc chambers. The factory didn't build high compression 400's or any with 4bbl.

Stephen is being charitable I see.

The heads the factory put on a 400 are garbage, pure and simple, regardless of the ccs. If you ever come across a complete 400 motor they should be among the first things you set out by the curb, along with the M2MV carb and the joke intake. I have a set of 186 (double-hump) heads on mine, but if I were doing it all over again, I'd go aftermarket. Back in the Civil War days when I first built this thing, there weren't any Edelbrocks, or AFRs, or Fast Burns, or any of the rest of that cool stuff we can just go down to the corner and buy.

Just for reference, they're 76 cc, the same as the crap that made mid-late 70s 350s with a 4-barrel have 170 HP. The bore (the thing you need to check to see if it's been bored) is 4.125".

Good luck!!! Maybe you get to join the club of the people with THE BIG ONE.

they're 76 garanteed the 400 from the factory wasn't never meant for performance . like the other guy said the stock heads are crap! plain and simple what ever you put back on there be sure to steam port them or you'll have worlds of fun with overheating. and you should be able to tell if they're overbore by looking at the top or sides of the pistons(usually the top). usually a gm piton indicates its astock bore:-) goood news for you . i myself am going to biuld a 400 too. letme know if you need any help further i would be glad to help you or anybody else for that matter .

i was wanting to run vortec heads, but my pistons are already dished so their 64 cc chambers may put my compression too high
