vortec 350 heads on 305

Alright, here is the situation; I’m going to be getting the Vortec 350 TPI setup. But I don’t want to exactly have all the stuff sitting in the garage waiting to be built. So I’m going to buy the Vortec Heads/Vortec base plate/combo from www.sdpc2000.com. But I don’t want to wait until I rebuild a 350, and put this kit on there.

The thing is, the engine by itself is cheaper. So which would give me more HP gains? The Vortec on the 305, or replacing the 305 short block with a 350 short block. I'm thinking the Vortec will put me at a 250 HP rating with the TPI setup still, while the 350 setup will bring me to 210-220 HP.

Vortec kit = $1,420 + shipping
350 Short block (rebuilt) = $800

Give me any advice you guys got,

Shane

350 heads dont work on a 305, well (some can) but you will have very low compression, some heads will actually overlap the 305 bore so I wouldent evne suggest you attempt this project unless you have all the correct componets ready to drop.

vortech 350 heads won't work.

only heads for we 305ers are the sr torquer 305s, and the aluminum l98 heads.

good luck

wait to do the motor work... and do it all at once.

"Patience my son"

Do it once and do it right. Save your money and do the entire engine at once, especially if this is your daily driver.

You know what made my 305 more fun to drive AND get better mileage?? New Shocks/struts, new brakes, wonderbar and strut tower brace with a 3.42 ratio rear end and SLP posi. A good tune-up won't hurt either.

Don't get me wrong, I'm building a 350 myself, but for ultimate drivability, do the suspension and brake work, plus gearing first. You gotta trust me on this!!

3.42 ratios are everywhere, just score one from any v6 car from 86 on up. The best way to go is a 90-92 v6 car, because then the $99 SLP posi unit bolts right in. Otherwise you have to buy axle shafts from a 90-92 car.

Again, build up the car so it's ready for the extra power, then worry about the motor. The carbon-metallic pads, synthetic brake fluid, gabriel VST shocks and struts, new brake components out back, and 3.42 gearing with new seals and bearings is the best money I've spent over the past few months.

Good luck with the project! Here's what I did with my rear end.

Umm, Vortec heads will work on a 305. You'll drop compression without milling them though. In fact they made pretty good power (more than S/R Torquers) on a 305 in this buildup : www.dcpnet.org/stuff/305Buildup/page1.jpg change the page number through 5 for the whole article.

But I would wait to do all the engine stuff at once, too much work otherwise.

I agree with 86. Don't be kickin' a dead horse.

Build the 350 with the vortecs and install it all at once.

The difference will be well worth the wait.
In fact if you really want to go fast, build your own
RamJet 350 (350 flat top short block, vortec heads, RamJet 350EFI manifold and injection. LT4 Hot cam or Crane,CompCams equivelent.) and sell off the complete TPI setup with the 305 to someone else.

Then you'll have a true hi-performance motor.
A very street friendly 430BHP

i was wanting a Ram Jet 350, i think i should wait until then. Those Ram Jet engines are some tight *** shiznats. Ist hat engine actually in your car or did you pull it off a site. If its in your car you have to post pics or PM me with them. How mcuh did the whole setup cost you?

No it's a pic I pulled off the net. You can read about
