L98 Heads w/ TBI (Emissions Legal?)
L98 Heads w/ TBI (Emissions Legal?)
Hello,
After pricing out the aluminum L98 heads for the 305 that will be going into my Volvo (yes, Volvo) 740 sedan I think they are the way to go. Not to mention the fact that they will save me 50lbs over the front end. I've considered using Edelbrock's Performer TBI manifold which is an EGR setup that carries a C.A.R.B EO number. The matching cam is also ok'ed by the C.A.R.B. I read in a post somewhere that L98 heads have no EGR outlet, and that the outlets are in the exhaust manifolds themselves-will this pose a problem when I put it all together? I'm pretty sure that the Corvette manifolds will fit in the Volvo body so could I just plumb lines from the manifolds to the EGR valve? Also, would I need a custom chip for the TBI since the heads/intake/cam are going to greatly increase flowrates?
Thanks,
Matthew C. Hall

you're better off with the edelbrocks than the L98s. Personally id go with the 23* Trick Flows. The new chambers look just like the LS1s. Edebrock is just about to replace their dated head design. Just I'm just bench racing over here but I do read alot

Matt,
So, you're going to join the many who have converted the "Ya - Sure der, hey" sedans and wagons with V-8s. I've seen a few done with Ford 302s, and they're sleepers - almost as quick as a stock F-body and certainly much better than the native engine. I've heard of SBC conversions but have never seen one. Anything would be an improvement, I suppose. But be aware that you'll probably have more performance and far cheaper repair bills that Volvo ever intended the car to experience.
If you have an issue with the EGR supply, you could use the LT1 exhaust manifolds and EGR scheme. We all know that CARB accepted millions of those.
Not to start a flame war, but my wife (who is Norwegian) says that the Swedish "safety" car is safe because it parks so well. According to her, the far superior Norskes would have built a better vehicle just to assert their superiority, but some Swiss guy named Louis Chevrolet already invented one. So instead, they decided to invent the paper clip. Go figure.

You need to get the exhaust gases from the exhaust manifolds into the TBI intake somehow. Since the only way the TBI intake is made is to get it from the heads, I think you're SOL on using the L98 heads. I'd say stick with some good 305 heads.
