My friend asked me to post this for him! He has an '89 Formula awhile back he put a rebuilt 355 in it! When he built the engine he bought a brand new oil pump for it and also hooked up a different oil pressure guage!! He's had decent oil pressure up until now! Now he says it won't hold above 25PSI...ever!! The Pump is probably only about 6 months old or so I would say and the engine was rebuilt about the same time!! He's checked his oil level and says they're fine! He changes the oil regularly! What could possibly be causing this crappy oil pressure???

86,

Lots of possibilities, from a bearing failure to a slipped pickup tube. If the oil pressure is truly low (don't believe the dash gauge - verify with another gauge) you'll probably be pulling the oil pan to find the problem.

actually im the one my friend was talking for (iwas at work!) anyhow i've used 2 (new) guages. and niether one of them reads any different! it starts out around 65 psi but drastically drops over the time you drive it! till it reaches 25 or 20 psi i know it could be the rods or mains(bearings) and the damn pickups on sbchevys tend to fall off all the time! but i trully dont know how to test anything on this subject? any help immediatly would be great its a daily driver! please help email me anytime!!

That sounds depressingly like a bearing. Thanks for sharing it with us. Probably a main, since a rod would be knocking. I believe he needs (ahem, you need) to put a crank kit in it before it blows up and trashes the block or something else, rather than waiting until after. The pump is probably OK, I have never in all my days seen one that does that, they either work or they don't, no halfway only when cold.
