Fuel pump questions?

Who has replaced their fuel pump in their garage? I need some help, actually I just need someone to tell me exactly how to do it. Also, can I swap my TBI pump to a TPI? Would there be any benefit if it is possible? I plan on swapping to TPI within the next year, that's why I ask. Thanks.

there is a big differance in tbi and tpi pumps, in price and output. you need the pump to match your fuel delivery system. the pump is located in the fuel tank. drop the tank and access is through the top of the tank, where all the lines are. you'll need to lower the rear, but not remove and remove any exhause that's in the way. it's not near as hard to do as it sounds.

I need to replace the rear anyway...so I might as well take it off. What else to I need to remove or move, other than exhaust?

to make your life easy, i'd drain the tank.... its easy n wont take u long

the lines (there'll be 3 of them i'm sure) are connected, once u unhook the straps and disconnect them lines (they are easy) you'll have the tank out and your set...

its nice to have someone else thre for safety if you dont drain the tank... sucky to get the tank to fall on you n pour gas all over you..

hate smelling like gas

Remember to remove the fuel filler door and the plastic around the fuel filler neck before you unstrap the fuel tank.

I had a heck of a time getting my fuel tank to wiggle out from under the car. I used a hammer and a block of wood to beat on the filler neck to get the tank out. It should come out without having to do that though.

Most of the job is pretty strait forward. The only thing that can be hard is getting the tank angled just right to get it out (and back in).

A 20 inch breaker bar does wonders at getting some of those suspension bolts to loosen.

Did you check your fuel pressure with a fuel pressure guage? It would really stink to go through all the work of dropping the tank and not even needing to.

There is deffinately NO fuel getting to the motor. The car cranks but will not catch. I am 99.9% positive it is the fuel pump, so Im not worried about that really. Its ok that I have to do it anyway because I want to put an access door in for when I convert to TPI and I want to replace the rear and exhaust anyway.
