Fuel Gauge not reading right....
Fuel Gauge not reading right....
i have a problem here. I replaced all of my lightbulbs on my instrument panel w/ new ones. the required taking the whole cluster out. when I put it back in everything worked fine, but the prob is that the fuel gauge turns on, but it goes on right past full, and basically is straight up. like way more than full. I don't know what it is, since all of the other gauges read correctly. I tried swapping out the fuel gauges w/ another one that I have lying around, and it does the same so something else is wrong. any ideas??

You may want to check your sending unit for the fuel gauge if you are sure the other gauge you tried is good. The fuel gauge looks at the resistance of the sending unit to determine how much fuel you have. I think its 90 ohms when full and 0 ohms when empty. Good luck, I hope you get it figured out.

Just a thought, but could you have crushed a wire and its grounding the gauge?

Don't flip out just yet. I just installed new gauges in my dash and fuel level was oneof them. Mine reads way above full now too, but I was warned by some others who did this swap that the gauge will do that at first. Almost like it has to re-learn where it needs to be. Be careful though, two of them also said they almost ran out of gas because the first time or two it read at 1/4 tank and it was near empty...
The other problem may be crud at the gas tank. The wires at the connection get a little corroded and they read full. My old one did this. It read way over full until about 1/2 tank, then would drop and read normally until Empty.

When I was trying diagnose the problem with my fuel guage(turned out the sending unit was bad) I took the guage out and hooked it up to a 12 volt power supply on. There is a third terminal which gets voltage sent to it from the in-tank sensor.
Anyway, in one of the configureations I had it in before I figured out exactly how it worked, the guage went way past full too. So it sounds like you might have a bad wire or something didn't get connected all the way. I would take a voltmeter and test the different terminals with ignition on. One should be ground, the other 12 volt and the sensor input somwhere between those two. I can't remember which was which though:-) Hope that makes sense.~Arnold

well this week I am lucky to get ashmatic bronchitis/pneumonia and haven't done much at all this week. I went to to hospital yesterday cuz I couldn't breathe, and they gave me a inhaler and some strong stuff. So I'm better today, but the weather is still really cold here in wisconsin, so I'll prolly wait till we get a warm day until I venture... I'll try pushing the connectors @ the back of the gauges into the cluster, making sure everything is nice and tight, and maybe that'll remedy the problem. What a PITA, all I did was pull the cluster to change all the bulbs to brighter ones, and red unstead of white btw. I ended up losing of of those little green "chips" for the turn signals out, so now it's wierd trying to get used to white turn signals, and red gauges, maybe I should pull the cluster out and replace the turn signal lights w/ amber colored ones?? we'll see when I don't feel like one of the undead.
