It takes more power to turn meshing gears than a chain does.
However, racers use gear drives because of more precise control of cam timing.

Chain gear drive aren't the best for street cars because it can give off false knock and your car will suffer from timing retard.

Not to mention that no one to my knowledge makes gear drive for TPI cars. I checked around and contacted a few gear drive manufactuers and they said they dont make them for the newer cams that have a smaller nose, rather than the larger nose of the old cams, or some crap like that.
