WOW!!!! Almost blew my muffler off

OK, I replaced my MAF sensor (last thing I replaced trying to get rid of CODE 33) and was resetting the curb idle because I could tell someone else had played with it before I got the car.....

I did just like the instructions I got off the board a week ago..... I had the idle down to about 400rpm's when it started idling real choppy so I raised it just a tad.... I then completed the instructions and had everything hooked back up to check the idle. I trurned the key, then BOOOOOM, it backfired!!!!!!!

I thought someone was firing a shotgun right next to me it was so load..... I proceeded to start the car and it did start right up, but was noticably louder than before..... So I went to the look under the back of the car and found that my muffler (stock type) is now round instead of oval like before....

What the hell happened?????? What is wrong with my car????? I am still getting CODE 33.....'

Any thoughts?????? Still has the same symptons.... Any time you start the car, it will fire up, stumble down and stall..... You have to keep the idle up for a few seconds and then the SES will come on and she will idle just fine....

I have already tried to set the TPS and I have to keep it set to about .60v for it to run halfway desent......

Thanks,
Tim

I was getting detonation in my exhaust system, and it did indeed blow my pipe right out of the Cat. (I took it as a good excuse to get some flomasters installed) It turned out to be a fule supply problem, my fule pressure was 4lbs under. Replacing the fule pump fixed her up.

It's odd because the fule pump doesn't hum or do any of the normal "malfunctioning" fule pump things. It just doesn't supply enough pressure.

The SES is the ecm flagging the error and going into N-Alpha mode if i recal correctly. Its using the tps and rpms to generate a MAF term to do fueling so when it does that it stops dumping s-loads of gas in and doing somthing resembling running normal. I get the same thing if i forget to plug my map back in. Blows smoke and idles like puke for a second and then illuminates teh SES and runs ok again. Thats probably what caused your muffler to nearly blow out., all that extra gas finding its way into the exaust. Figure out what is causing your MAF code. Im not too familar what the code 33 represents on a car with MAF but I suspect it will run much better with the MAF operating again and the engine will stop running rich.

Is this the same as going in limp mode????

I have already replaced the AIC, MAF, MAF relays, tried to adjust the TPS (could only get it to .60v and still idles like crap). I have checked all connections, twice..... I even pulled the connectors from the emc and chip and reset all connections.....

Thanks,
Tim

well if what dimented24x7 said is true and the ECM was in N-Alpha mode, it probly was overfueling when you were turning the idle that far down.....

then when you started it, the gas that was building up in the exhaust ignited.... and the pressure ballooned your muffler.
