too long? yes, to large of diameter no don't think so, long as all the parts fit in the cap and on the plugs.

I bought Crane 11mm wires just to be different. They didn't cost any more than any other wire set and were trimmable so I got them. I haven't had any problems with them, so I guess that's a good indication that bigger wires aren't bad.

According to Jacobs Electronics, any wire with a diameter greater than 8.8 causes increased resistance and reduces voltage at the plug. This info came with their complete kit a friend of mine (Steve) bought several months ago.

So I guess bigger ain't always better; well that's Jacobs' point of view anyway.
