How much for a mechanic to change head gaskets on an L98?

I think one of my head gaskets may be blown, but I don't feel like pulling them off, what would a garage charge to do that?

You would do better doing it your self.
Good Luck.

welp.. they want $290 just to change a fuel pressure regulator.. and all you have to do is take off a plenum.., so i don't even think i would want to know what a head gasket would cost...

I'm just gonna grin and bare it and change them myself, I got quoted at $600 to $800 from a local garage, thats just a tad too much.

Doing it yourself will only cost under $100, complete, including fresh oil and filter.

Catch your old antifreeze - if it isn't TOO old - and reuse it.

I just pulled my heads last week just to do some minor grinding on the chambers. All my accessories remained in place (a/c compressor, alternator, p/s pump, water pump, etc.) and I only had to remove a few bolts that go through the accessory brackets into the heads.

Plenum and runner gaskets are reuseable.

Intake gaskets are $10, head gaskets are a little over $11.00 each, a tube of sensor-safe silicone sealant and maybe a gallon of antifreeze from AutoZone. You might need a new set of valve cover gaskets if you aren't running the rubber reuseable kind from Fel Pro or Detroit; they're the most costly items, about 30 bucks or so. Also, I always use Permatex #2 on the head bolt threads; so add in the cost of a tube of that gooey stuff ($2/$3)

I took a radio into the garage, tuned in my favorite station and had at it. Piece of cake.

Shoot me a line if you get stuck.

Hope this helps.

Jake
