3 Vortec Head Questions

1. Could I use them on a stock 79 Truck 350 motor, from what I remember they had dished pistons, I heard the vortecs only work with flat-top pistons.

2. Will regular headers bolt up to the Vortecs or do I need special headers?

3. What kind of springs would I need to run if I run a Xtreme Energy 274H cam?

1. Vortec heads have a 64cc combustion chamber. The only reason to I could think of not to use a dished piston would be too low a compression ratio...this would all depend how how dished the pistons were.

2. Vortec heads have the standard exhaust pattern, so regular headers will work.

3. I'm no spring expert...Comp Cams has a spring they reccommend using with every cam they make. Check thier website.

1. I am talking about the stock pistons, I belive they are dished, and the compression is 8.5:1 w/ the stock heads (think they are 76cc heads), so what would be a rough est. of the compression w/ vortecs?

Oh and would stock pushrods work or would I need to get longer ones? Centerbolt valve covers too right?

Compression should be right around 10:1.
Yes, centerbolt valve covers are needed.
Not sure on the pushrods...I would guess that the stock length would work, can somebody confirm?

Man, 10:1 with iron heads is kinda pushing it, I guess I could use a thick head gasket but the highest octane gas around here is 93, and that is only at a few stores, not to abundant.

I have a very similar setup to the one youre after....my cam is the "biggest" one you can use.....compression will be ok on 93 octane gas as long as you dont get carried away with advance. stock pushrods will work fine.
