speedo/odometer causing chaos

Whenever i start my car up in the morning it seems for the first 10 minutes or so the speedo won't read anything, it will just sit at the bottom and when it does this the odometer does not change. It will either then "catch" once i stop along the way to school and start reading or suddenly jump up to the speed I'm going. I've also noticed that every once in a while the speedo will bounce 2-4 mph as i drive at a constant speed.

This is bad b/c for one i don't know how fast i'm going (no, honestly office I have no idea how fast i was going...), my car mileage is being thrown off, and i have no idea how many miles per gallon i'm getting b/c the odometer isn't reading all the time - i'm trying to figure out if i'm running rich and with the odometer in it's current state i'm runningabout 8-9 miles/gallon on a stock engine....

I'm getting the auto tranny fluid drained; will that most likely help or does this seem like a problem with the VSS?

For your speedometer the cause could be a bad speedometer cable or the gear that drives the cable in the tranny. this could also be the cause of the speed jump. I seriously doubt you are just getting 9 miles to the gallon, my 67 chevrolet gets 10 mpg with 4.11 gears, 10.5 compression, three speed standard tranny and the engine is rated at 450 bhp.

yea, when i started getting 9 mpg I realized this speedo thing was causing more problems than i realized. I've got a 91 RS so it have the electrical speedo, no cable so would the VSS be to blame?

Could be electrical or the plastic gears that drive the VSS.
Might be the buffer too (little yellow plastic box by the ECM) .

Okay, stupid me, i was just outside and use thw rie to jump over the ALDL do the SES would tell me codes. Now i'm getting the 24 code. I should have checked this earlier. Does this code refer to anything specific to the VSS or just that something is wrong somewhere along the line?
