84 small problems

ok here is the situation My friend's got an 84 berlinetta and has a stock digital speedometer, odomiter. the speedometer is off and the odomiter changes. thay said this too "whenever you start the car (not necessarily when the engines cold, just after you've run it for a while and then let it sit for about 20-30 minutes) the engine won't rev high enough to keep it running and it will cut out a lot if you just sit there or try to drive off. i don't know what that means cuz when i get in the car inthe morning when the engine is cold it starts right up and stays running." it dose have shorts, and it's an old car. I don't know much about digital dash boards. on the odomiter never heard of it changing? what should we Do?

A failing digital instrument cluster won't affect the engine operation. There is likely another problem related to both symptoms, or two separate problems. Either way, something else is causing the engine operation problems, not the digital I/P.

Can you get more information about the engine problems? What engine/fuel system is it using?

about the digi dash, you can replace the dash control unit( think it piggybacks the ecm, its a black box with the dash controls in it) if im not wrong, that should get the dash working. if im wrong, sorry, not an electronics tech.but thats what my buddy did to his. his dash worked off and on for a long time then he replaced the box and now he has no problems.the dash shouldnt have anything to do with the engine running, unless there is a bad short in it.in which case it grounding can cause all sorts of havoc, but id say thats a worse case scenario.the only cars in which ive had electronics cause drivability problems are mid 70s mopar products.Vader hit it right on the head.
